Senator Henry Stern Launches First Jobs Tour of the San Fernando Valley

SACRAMENTO – Last Friday State Senator Henry Stern, along with Senator Bob Hertzberg, and members of the Valley Economic Alliance, visited several local businesses throughout the San Fernando Valley to seek input about innovative ways to bring jobs to and elevate the economic vitality of the region.

The tour included stops at Aerojet, in Canoga Park; toy maker MGA Entertainment’s new campus in Chatsworth; Cal State University Northridge; Brent’s Deli in Northridge; and Bobrick Washroom Equipment Inc., in North Hollywood.

Bipartisan Vote Moves Senator Henry Stern’s Bill to Protect Child Victims of Sexual Violence

SACRAMENTO – Today, State Senator Henry Stern’s SB 756, which would provide restitution for mental health services to young sexual abuse victims, was unanimously approved by the Senate. The bill now heads to the Assembly for consideration.

State Senator Henry Stern’s Legislation on Voting Rights Passes Senate Floor

SACRAMENTO – Today, State Senator Henry Stern presented his first bill, SB 286 on the Senate floor. The legislation aims to increase voter turnout and reduce the cost of elections. It passed the Senate on a 28-12 bi-partisan vote.

SB 286 will allow voters who misplace or do not receive their vote-by-mail (VBM) ballots to cast a regular ballot if it is certified that the ballot has not already been received.

Urgency Measure to Halt Full Re-Opening of Aliso Canyon Clears Key Senate Committee

SACRAMENTO – The Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee today voted in favor of Senate Bill 57 an urgency measure by State Senator Henry Stern to stop the reopening of the Aliso Canyon Gas Storage Facility until state regulators have completed an investigation to determine the root cause of the massive methane leak which took months to plug and displaced more than 8,000 families from their homes.

Senator Stern Holds First-Ever Interactive Senate Elections Committee Hearing

Participants in the first California State Senate Elections Committee hearing held at a high school shared their success stories on youth civic engagement with an audience of about 200 high school and college students and others on Friday, March 17.  Hundreds of students around the state also watched a live stream of the event and provided video testimony.

Bill to Prevent SoCalGas from Resuming Gas Injections at Aliso Canyon Faces Key Vote

The Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee will hear testimony and vote on Senate Bill 57 on Tuesday, March 21st.  The hearing comes after weeks of delay since the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee voted 7-2 in favor of the urgency measure.

SB 807 Elevates Teaching Profession in California

SACRAMENTO - State Senator Henry Stern (D-Canoga Park) announced he and Senator Cathleen Galgiani (D-Stockton) jointly introduced Senate Bill 807, the Teacher Recruitment and Retention Act of 2017, which helps new teachers afford required training and exempts teaching income from California income tax for those who teach in public school classrooms beyond five years.  California would become the first state in the nation that excludes teaching income from state income taxes.
