SACRAMENTO ­– Today, Senator Bradford (D-Gardena) and Senate President pro Tempore Atkins (D-San Diego) introduced Senate Bill 2 to increase accountability for law enforcement officers that commit serious misconduct and illegally violate a person’s civil rights.

SACRAMENTO ­– Yesterday, Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) issued this statement in response to Congresswoman Maxine Waters’ formal request for U.S. Attorney General Barr to investigate the killing of 18-year-old Andres Guardado by a sheriff’s deputy near Gardena as a civil rights violation.

SACRAMENTO – Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the two remaining bills on his desk by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), closing the book on a successful legislative year in which all of Senator Bradford’s bills sent to the Governor were signed into law.

SACRAMENTO ­– Today, September 9th, the Governor signed Senate Bill 1447 into law. This bill, authored jointly by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), Senator Anna Caballero (D-Salinas), and Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona), expands California’s assistance programs for small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic by establishing a new $100 million small businesses hiring tax credit program.

SACRAMENTO ­– Yesterday, the California Department of Business Oversight (DBO) announced the inaugural award of nearly $1 million in CalMoneySmart grants to 12 nonprofit organizations throughout California. The $4 million CalMoneySmart grant program was created by SB 455 (Chapter 478, Statutes of 2019), authored by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena). This bill established the California Financial Empowerment Fund (FEF) to provide low- and moderate-income Californians with greater access to financial tools and education they can use to improve their financial well-being.

SACRAMENTO ­– Today Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1157, authored by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena). This bill requires landlords managing medium- to large, subsidized, multi-family housing units in California to offer their tenants the option of having their rental payments reported to a major credit bureau.

SACRAMENTO ­– Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1244, authored by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena). This bill authorizes state-licensed cannabis laboratories to test samples of cannabis or cannabis products for a state or local regulatory, law enforcement, or prosecuting agency. SB 1244 was sponsored by Los Angles City Attorney Mike Feuer.

SACRAMENTO ­– Today Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 203, authored by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), which prevents youth, up to age 17, from being interrogated prior to being held in custody and before waiving their Miranda rights without consulting with legal counsel.
