Governor Signs SB 620 Allowing Judges to Strike Unwarranted Sentence Enhancements

SACRAMENTO – This afternoon, Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 620 into law, updating mandated sentencing enhancements for felony cases in which a firearm was used.  This bill, sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of California, changes current law which prohibits judges from striking or dismissing a firearm sentence enhancement and allows judges to determine on a case-by-case basis as to whether or not a 10-year, 20-year or life-term extension is justified.

Jobs Not Jails: Opportunity to Seal Juvenile Records Signed by Governor Brown

SACRAMENTO – Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 312, authored by State Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), that provides a pathway for individuals convicted of a crime before their 17th birthday to petition a court to have the record related to their youthful offense sealed.

“Every aspect of life is an obstacle if you have a record” stated Senator Skinner. “SB 312 establishes a fair system for past youthful offenders to clear their criminal records.”

Measure to update 20-year-old Swimming Pool Safety Act Signed by Governor Brown

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill (SB) 442 was signed by Governor Jerry Brown this afternoon. The measure updates the 20-year-old residential Swimming Pool Safety Act, and its common-sense and cost-effective modifications prevent drowning fatalities across the state by requiring an additional layer of safety in residential and public pools, while also requiring inspection of pool safety measures as part of the sale and transfer of a home in California.

Governor Signs Bill for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the New Los Angeles Rams and Chargers Stadium at Hollywood Park

SACRAMENTO – Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 582 into law, which will expand the locations where an alcohol manufacturer may purchase advertising space and time from, or on behalf of, an on-sale retail licensee by including the Los Angeles Stadium in the City of Inglewood and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Sen. Holly J. Mitchell’s support key to passage   

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Brown today signed into law a plan to allow the Los Angeles Unified School District to move forward with a pair of single-gender schools to promote leadership and interest in technology-related fields among its diverse students.

The action affects the district’s Girls Academic Leadership Academy, which opened its doors last year, and the Boys Academic Leadership Academy, which welcomed its first class of students at the start of this semester.
