Governor Signs Landmark Parks, Water, and Flood Control Bond

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. last night signed Senate Bill 5 (de León et al) into law, which places a roughly $4 billion general obligation bond measure on the June 2018 ballot.   Senate Bill 5 is the first bond measure in state history to focus on social equity, including access to parks for all Californians and targeting water and flood control investments to the areas with the most unmet needs.

San Francisco –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Senator Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) will join advocates of a series of bills that expanded the rights of LGBT people in California. These includes SB 179, the Gender Recognition Act, which Governor Brown signed last night, as well as SB 219, the LGBT Senior Bill of Rights, and SB 239, which modernizes HIV criminalization laws.

Gov. Jerry Brown today signed SB 179, legislation authored by Sen. Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) that will create a third gender marker on state-issued identification documents for people who identify as nonbinary or intersex. The bill will also streamline the process for transgender, intersex and nonbinary Californians to obtain identification documents that accurately reflect their gender.

SB 490 Signed Ensuring Fair Pay for Salon Professionals

SACRAMENTO ­– Today, Governor Brown signed SB 490 into law, which authorizes licensed salon professionals to be paid by commission, as long as they are guaranteed at least twice the state minimum wage. 

“SB 490 allows salon professionals to not only get paid for their services, but also compensated for selling products that boost the bottom line for the salons where they work,” said Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena).  “It is only fair that salon professionals be compensated for the business they bring to their respective salons.”
