Sacramento, California- Today, SB 972 the suicide prevention legislation authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D–La Cañada Flintridge, passed the Assembly Education Policy Committee.

SACRAMENTO – The California Senate today passed a state budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year that begins on July 1, 2018.

“We have recovered from the dark days of the recession, and now the state’s fiscal outlook is the strongest it’s been in a generation,” said Senate Leader Toni Atkins (D-San Diego).

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) today announced the following changes to Senate standing committees. Designated committee chairs and membership will be formally adopted by the Senate Rules Committee when it convenes later today - June 14, 2018.

Sacramento, California - California Senate President pro Tem Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, announced Portantino’s new assignment last Friday.  The Senate Rules Committee convened Monday, June 11th where Senator Portantino, D- La Cañada Flintridge, was formally appointed as the Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

SACRAMENTO – Following compelling testimony by college students speaking about the importance of improving access to reproductive care on college campuses, the Assembly Health Committee today passed important legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will ensure access to medication abortion services on California public university campuses for students who may become pregnant and seek to terminate their pregnancy during the first ten weeks.

SACRAMENTO – A key Assembly policy committee today approved three measures in a package of sweeping reforms of how California’s criminal justice system treats youths and young adults.

The bills approved by the Assembly Public Safety Committee are part of the #EquityAndJustice package jointly authored by Sens. Holly J. Mitchell and Ricardo Lara. The two Los Angeles-area Democrats proposed the measures as part of major justice reforms that put greater emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation and maintaining family cohesion.

Sacramento–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) issued the following statement regarding Assembly Bill 931, by Assemblymembers Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) and Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento):
“Too many people, particularly young black men, are being shot by law enforcement officers. We must reduce the number of police shootings, which we can do without impairing the ability of our officers to keep our communities, and themselves, safe.

Measure is part of #EquityAndJustice package

SACRAMENTO – A bill that’s part of a sweeping package of criminal-justice reforms on how California treats youths and young adults was approved today by a key Assembly policy committee.

Sacramento – When the Redwood Complex Fire burned over 36,000 acres and destroyed over 500 structures last October in Mendocino County, that included 187 homes that are in the Redwood Valley County Water District. The District infrastructure faced significant damage due to the fires and it was discovered the main water line would need to be expanded in order to rebuild the homes to meet modern-day fire safety and building code requirements, with enough flow to accommodate fire sprinklers.

SACRAMENTO – Dr. Richard Pan, a pediatrician and author of legislation to increase vaccination rates, commented on data released by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) demonstrating that, in its second year of implementation, Senate Bill 277 continues to keep children and communities safe and healthy from vaccine-preventable disease.
