Effort launched to address delays, financial hardships  

SACRAMENTO – Last year, California launched a new statewide program for approving individuals to serve as foster caregivers, and the goal was to fix an inefficient, ineffective system. 

But since the program has been in place, families have seen huge delays and have not received needed support, causing financial hardship and deterring permanent placements of foster youth.

Sen. Glazer Introduces Pension Reform Legislation

SACRAMENTO – New state employees would be free to opt out of the state pension plan and choose a self-directed and portable retirement plan instead under legislation introduced today by State Sen. Steve Glazer (D-Orinda).

Glazer’s bill, SB 1149, would offer new employees a 401 (K)-style plan in which their own contributions would be fully matched by the state, at the same level the state now contributes to the California Public Employees Retirement System defined benefit plan.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Ed Hernandez, O.D. (D-West Covina) introduced Senate Bill 1108 to prohibit work requirements as a condition to receive Medi-Cal. Earlier this year, the Trump Administration invited states to revise their Medicaid policies by imposing restrictions that will only lead to fewer people with health insurance. This bill ensures that California says NO to this invitation, and continues to prioritize access to health care for some of our lowest-income residents.

Senator Newman Introduces Bill to Extend Eligibility for Student Transit Fare Subsidies

Sacramento, CA – Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) today introduced legislation aimed at reducing traffic congestion and parking issues near colleges and universities by expanding eligibility for transit subsidies to more students.  Senate Bill (SB) 1119 will revise the eligibility requirements for Low Carbon Transit Operation Program (LCTOP) funds to allow more student and other low-income residents to qualify for free or reduced transit fares.
