Tobacco 21 Legislation Moves to Governor’s Desk for Signature

Bill seeks to substantially reduce youth access to tobacco

(Sacramento, CA) – SBX2 7, authored by Senator Ed Hernandez, O.D., which would increase the tobacco purchase age to 21, cleared its final legislative hurdle on Thursday morning, passing off of the Senate Floor with a vote of 26 to 10. The bill now moves to the Governor for signature.

                              California is Poised to Become Second State in the Nation to Raise Smoking Age to 21
 
(Sacramento, CA) – Today, California legislators came together to make history as the second state in the nation to pass a bill, authored by Senator Ed Hernandez (SBX2 7), that raises the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products to 21.

(Sacramento, CA) – Today, on a Senate Floor vote of 28-11, Senator Ed Hernandez, O.D. (D–West Covina), Chair of the Senate Health Committee, passed measure SBX2 2, a specialized tax on Managed Care Organizations (MCO) that will help stabilize Medi-Cal funding and provide significant resources for those with developmental disabilities. The bill later passed the Assembly Floor on a vote of 61-16.

Senator presses for immediate aquifer protection

Wolk says, ‘We need to stop digging deeper in critical areas that are sinking’
(SACRAMENTO, CA) –Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) pressed for a renewed effort to protect the state’s aquifers against critical overdraft today following a legislative hearing to oversee state implementation of the 2014 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Wolk is carrying Senate Bill 1317, also known as the Aquifer Protection Act, to halt the proliferation of new wells and to slow the depletion of aquifers to avoid permanent damage to the state’s groundwater resources.
