Legislation builds on national protection for Berryessa Snow Mountain
(SACRAMENTO, CA) –State Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) and Assemblymember Bill Dodd (D-Napa) introduced legislation late Friday to establish a state conservancy to protect, preserve and restore the Northern Inner Coast Range’s natural, historical, cultural and other attributes—building on last year’s declaration of the Berryessa Snow Mountain Region as a National Monument by President Barack Obama.

Bills support investment in key strategy in Governor’s climate change plan
(SACRAMENTO, CA)–Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) introduced two measures today to solidify the important role that protection and restoration of natural and working lands play in meeting California’s climate change goals, and encourage investment in that area.

Sacramento, CA… State Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) today introduced Senate Bill 1145, the Golden State Reading Guarantee Act of 2016.  This bill will require an individualized reading plan created in collaboration by a local-level team that includes the student’s teacher, parent or legal guardian for all students in kindergarten through fourth grade who are identified as struggling readers.

Senator Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, introduced legislation to compel doctors on probation for serious offenses to notify their patients, prohibit the “rehoming” of adopted children, prevent DUI offenders from driving drunk again, and require the CPUC to tighten its oversight of utilities’ work to prevent wildfires caused by powerlines.

State Senator Jerry Hill introduced legislation today requiring doctors on disciplinary probation for serious offenses to notify patients before visits take place and to obtain signed confirmation that the patient received the alert. SB 1033 compels the Medical Board of California to draw up regulations for this stricter disclosure requirement and the steps doctors should take to abide by the new rules.

Legislation would fill gap created by Congressional ban on federally funded research
(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Legislation was introduced today to establish a Firearm Violence Research Center at the University of California with the stated purpose of funding and carrying out important research on firearm-related violence.  Congress, in 1996, at the request of the National Rifle Association, effectively banned funding for firearm-related research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and has since defeated numerous efforts to remove the ban.
