SACRAMENTO – In the winter of 2016, Sens. Holly J. Mitchell and Ricardo Lara introduced bills to bring common sense back into the criminal justice system after an era of mass incarceration.

Now, after the signing of their 10th bill, California has moved the needle on restoring the values of rehabilitation, equity and family cohesion through their #EquityAndJustice bill package.

Mitchell’s Christmas in July event hosted hundreds of students and family members, with each guest presented with donated admission, a food voucher, Metro day pass and a gift bag which included thunder sticks to cheer on the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. While the game keyed on fun, Mitchell’s eighth annual Christmas-in-July event was part of her years-long effort to engage children to stay mentally, physically and nutritionally active during summer break.

#EquityAndJustice now goes to Gov. Brown

SACRAMENTO – California lawmakers have approved and sent to Gov. Brown Senate Bill 1391, which prohibits 14- and 15-year-olds from being tried as adults in criminal court and subsequently sent to adult prison.

SB 1391 is part of the #EquityAndJustice2018 package jointly authored by Senators Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Holly J. Mitchell (D-Los Angeles).
