SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) announced in a press conference today the introduction of Assembly Bill 2500, the Safe Consumer Lending Act, a bill to protect California families from abusive high-cost installment loans.

Sen. Holly J. Mitchell of Los Angeles sat down for a nearly 30-minute televised interview this week to discuss legislation, her agenda for 2018 (including the need to restore CalWorks funding), Capitol quilts honoring Black History Month, California's multi-billion dollar budget and the joys -- and challenges -- of being the mother of a "young Black man in America."

Focus on Defining Harassment and Identifying Challenges to Making Policies Work

SACRAMENTO – The Legislature’s Joint Committee on Rules, Subcommittee on Sexual Harassment Prevention and Response will hold its second working hearing February 15. The Subcommittee is laying the groundwork for developing new, bicameral policies and procedures for preventing and responding to sexual harassment complaints.

Effort launched to address delays, financial hardships  

SACRAMENTO – Last year, California launched a new statewide program for approving individuals to serve as foster caregivers, and the goal was to fix an inefficient, ineffective system. 

But since the program has been in place, families have seen huge delays and have not received needed support, causing financial hardship and deterring permanent placements of foster youth.

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Holly J. Mitchell will sponsor the installation of the Black Quilters Exhibit in the Capitol annex next to the governor’s ground floor office as well as a welcome reception for the artists in room 211.

The quilts will be provided by the Sisters Quilting Collective, African American Heritage Legacy, and the Brick House Art Gallery. There will be seven quilts in a range of sizes. Each quilt represents moments and imagery paying homage to the legacy of the Black experience and expression.
