California Legislature Agrees to Extend the Housing Crisis Act

September 1, 2021

The California state Senate today greenlighted Sen. Nancy Skinner’s housing bill, SB 8, which extends the provisions of the Housing Crisis Act of 2019 until 2030 and streamlines the creation of more housing throughout the state. The Senate approved SB 8 on a bipartisan vote of 30-3, after the bill garnered bipartisan approval in the State Assembly earlier this week on a 67-1 vote.

Gov. Newsom Signs College Athletes Bill by Senators Skinner and Bradford

Gov. Gavin Newsom today signed SB 26, a bill by Senators Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, and Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, that moves up the implantation date of California’s Fair Pay to Play Act to Sept. 1, 2021. SB 26, which is co-authored by California Senate Republican Leader Scott Wilk of Santa Clarita, also expands and strengthens the rights of college athletes to earn money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL).

California Legislature OKs Sen. Skinner’s Density Housing Bill, SB 290

August 30, 2021

The California state Senate today gave bipartisan approval to Sen. Nancy Skinner’s SB 290, which will update the state’s density bonus law to support more affordable housing, particularly for low-income college students. The Senate voted 32-4 in favor of SB 290 after the state Assembly approved it last week on a 66-1 vote. SB 290 now goes to Gov. Gavin Newsom for consideration.

The California state Senate today unanimously approved SB 26, a bill by Senators Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, and Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, that will move up the effective date of California’s Fair Pay to Play Act to Sept. 1, 2021. SB 26, which is co-authored by California Senate Republican Leader Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, will also expand and strengthen the rights of college athletes to earn money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL).

California state Senators Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, and Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, announced today that they’re amending their legislation, SB 26, to move up the implementation date of California’s Fair Pay to Play Act to Sept. 1, 2021. The announcement came as SB 26 was being approved unanimously by the Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism, & Internet Media. In addition, Skinner and Bradford recently amended SB 26 to include California community colleges under the Fair Pay to Play Act.

Sens. Skinner and Bradford Applaud Supreme Court Ruling on College Athletes

Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, and Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, applauded today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision against the NCAA in the case, ‘National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Alston.” The court ruled that the NCAA must abide by anti-monopoly laws and does not have blanket authority to deny the rights of college athletes when it comes to compensation.
