STATEMENT BY SENATOR HANCOCK ON THE OIL REFINERY SAFETY BILL, SB 1300

September 16, 2014

SB 1300 leaves untouched existing law regarding access to public records concerning oil companies. If a member of the public has concerns about an oil company -- safety, procedures, explosions, pricing, management, unethical or illegal behavior, etc. -- this bill will not affect existing access to that information.

SENATOR HANCOCK CONDEMNS CITIZENS UNITED SUPREME COURT DECISION ON ITS 5TH ANNIVERSARY & CALLS FOR ACTION TO OVERTURN

Sacramento – Senator Loni Hancock today called for action to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision on its 5th anniversary (January 21, 2015).

“Today marks a sad day in American history,” she said.  “The Supreme Court decision undermines American democracy by allowing corporations – including foreign corporations – to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence American election campaigns, without having it publicly reported.”

Senate & Assembly Joint Hearing on Police and Community Relations

Senate & Assembly Joint Hearing:

Law Enforcement and Community Trust in California

Sacramento – The Senate and Assembly Public Safety Committees will hold a joint hearing on Tuesday, February 10th on police and community relations in California. 

The hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Room 4203 of the State Capitol.  It is expected to be broadcast live on the California Channel and audio of the proceedings will be streamed on the State Senate’s website.

NEW BILL SEEKS INFORMATION ON COST-OVERRUNS IN STATE CONTRACTS

Sacramento – Senator Loni Hancock introduced legislation today to require bidders on state contracts to report, in their bid, whether there have been cost-overruns on previous state projects they have worked on. The bill, SB 630, adds a new section to the state Public Contracts code.

HANCOCK FILES LEGAL BRIEF SUPPORTING JUDGE’S RULING THAT DEATH PENALTY IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL

March 7, 2015

Sacramento – Senator Loni Hancock, Chair of the Senate Committee on Public Safety, late Friday filed a legal brief supporting the elimination of California’s death penalty.  The brief was filed on behalf of Ernest Dewayne Jones, who last year had his death sentence overturned by Federal District Court Judge Cormac Carney.
