Bill to Reduce Disparity in CEO and Worker Pay Clears First Committee

An effort to stop outrageous CEO pay by Senator Loni Hancock (D-Oakland) and Senator Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) passed the Senate Governance and Finance Committee today.
SB 1372 creates a new corporate tax table that decreases taxes for employers with reasonable differences between CEO and worker pay, and increases taxes on companies with large disparities between CEO and worker pay.

MAJOR REFORM OF SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IN CA PRISONS PASSES STATE SENATE

Sacramento – Last night, the State Senate passed SB 892, a bill by Senator Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) to revise and reform solitary confinement conditions and procedures in California’s prisons on a bi-partisan vote of 25-11.  The bill now goes to the State Assembly for consideration.

“Isolating large numbers of inmates for long periods of time is an expensive and deeply troubling practice that undermines effective rehabilitation and long-term public safety,” Senator Hancock said.  “Tonight’s Senate vote is the first step in overhauling a failed system.”

OAKLAND SMALL BUSINESS HONORED BY CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE TODAY

Sacramento – An innovative Oakland company, GoldieBlox, was selected today as “Small Business of the Year” for 2014 in the 9th Senate District by the California Legislature at an Awards Luncheon in Sacramento.  The event was attended by more than 70 legislators.

The company was nominated for the award by Senator Loni Hancock, who represents the district, which includes all of Alameda and parts of Contra Costa counties.  Joining Senator Hancock at the luncheon was Jan Hanson, Chief Operating and Financial Officer of the company.

LEGISLATURE PASSES FAR-REACHING OIL REFINERY SAFETY BILL
