Wieckowski in-vehicle camera bill passes Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee

SACRAMENTO –  The Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee today moved to put in place important privacy guardrails on the data collected from in-vehicle cameras by approving State Senator Bob Wieckowski’s SB 346 with bipartisan support. The bill would prohibit selling the data to third parties and using it for advertising.

More cars are becoming equipped with in-vehicle cameras that record the interior of the vehicle cabin and the actions of the driver. Some analysts expect this lucrative data to be worth over $750 billion by 2030.

Senator Wiener’s Mental Health Workforce Legislation Passes Assembly Higher Education Committee

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 964, the Behavioral Health Workforce Revitalization Act, passed the Assembly Higher Education Committee in an unanimous, bipartisan vote. It will now be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

SB 964 increases California’s investment in its behavioral health workforce to retain workers, increase the size of the behavioral health workforce, and support behavioral health workers who are facing a significant increase in demand for services.

Divestment from Fossil Fuels Bill Does Not Receive a Public Hearing

Sacramento, Calif. – On June 21, 2022 Senator Lena A. Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) issued the following statement after the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Public Employment and Retirement refused to allow Senate Bill 1173, The Fossil Fuel Divestment Act to have a public hearing in the committee. The bill would have significantly advanced state climate goals by requiring California’s two largest public pension funds to divest over $11 billion of fossil fuel investments by 2030.
