Key Sen. Hertzberg measures clear Senate, head to Assembly

SACRAMENTO – Greater protections from gun violence, nourishing homeless pets and making homeownership more affordable are among the proposed laws Sen. Bob Hertzberg will be fighting for in upcoming Assembly reviews. Other key measures sent to the chamber he led almost six years include improving school funding, making it cheaper to transmit energy, and broadening the reach and care of local health clinics. For pets, he wants to help provide food, shelter and veterinary services for those whose owners are obtaining help at state homeless shelters.

LEGISLATION ANNOUNCED TO CREATE SENTENCING ENHANCEMENTS FOR VIOLENCE TARGETED AT SCHOOLS AND PLACES OF WORSHIP

SACRAMENTO – Today, Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman (D-Stockton), Senator Dave Min
(D-Irvine), Assemblymember Carlos Villapudua (D-Stockton), Assemblymember Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Laguna Beach), and San Joaquin County District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced legislation to create sentencing enhancements for violent crimes targeting schools and places of worship.

Senate Bill 699 creates two sentence enhancements for specified felonies attempted or
committed at schools or houses of worship.

Bill to Reform Felony Murder Rule/LWOP Advances

Senate Bill (SB) 300 authored by State Senator Dave Cortese (D-Silicon Valley), a bill to reform California’s “felony murder special circumstance” law as well as the life in prison without parole (LWOP) sentence, cleared a crucial hurdle today when it advanced through the Assembly Public Safety Committee.

Legislation to Prevent Food Insecurity Among Military Families Passes Senate

SACRAMENTO, CA – The California State Senate has passed SB 950, which would require the State Department of Social Services (DSS) to submit a request to the United States Department of Agriculture, on or before December 31, 2023, to waive a federal requirement in order to exclude the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for members of a uniformed service from countable income in the calculation of CalFresh eligibility.

Legislature Approves Sen. Dodd’s Tribal Gaming Compact Extension Bill

SACRAMENTO – Legislation from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, to extend the gaming compacts of 29 California tribes, allowing the continued operation of casinos that support tribal development and provide jobs for thousands of workers statewide, has been approved by the Legislature.

“This extension allows tribes to continue along the path toward self-sufficiency and economic development,” Sen. Dodd said. “Also, it gives the state more time to negotiate long-term agreements that will benefit the state, employees and patrons.”
