SACRAMENTO - Senator Thomas J. Umberg (D – Orange County), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, with joint author, Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman (D-Stockton), Chair of the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, amended Senate Bill 1338 into a measure establishing CARE Courts in California. CARE Courts are a new policy framework proposed by Governor Gavin Newsom to provide community-based mental health and substance use disorder treatment services to Californians with the most acute challenges, many of whom are experiencing homelessness.

Senate Judiciary Committee approves Wieckowski's bill to protect workers' wages

SACRAMENTO – As some federal support programs are discontinued, the state Senate Judiciary Committee today approved SB 1477, authored by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) to enable low-wage workers to improve their financial stability by protecting more of their wages in garnishment cases.

Building on Wieckowski’s SB 501 passed in 2015, SB 1477 increases the amount protected in a worker’s wages to 80 hours of work at a minimum wage salary. It also restricts the use of civil arrest warrants in consumer debt matters.
