Senator Cabaldon bill keeps private equity investors out of medical decisions

Legislation by Senator Christopher Cabaldon (D-Yolo) to prevent private equity firms from interfering in doctors’ medical care of patients passed the Legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support this week and now heads to the Governor’s desk.
Senate Bill 351 strengthens the state’s current ban on the Corporate Practice of Medicine by granting the California Attorney General authority to take legal action against private equity groups and hedge funds that interfere with or exert control over the health care decisions of doctors and dentists working for medical practices in which they invest.

Cabaldon bill to prevent farmland tax breaks from being exploited to benefit private development passes…

Legislation by Senator Christopher Cabaldon (D-Yolo) to prevent developers from exploiting the special tax status of protected California farmland to finance urban improvements passed the Legislature this week with bipartisan support and now goes to the governor. SB 5 would prohibit acreage enrolled in the state’s Williamson Act or a Farm Security Zone from being placed in an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District (EIFD) until it is rezoned or reassessed to reflect its future use.

Bill to automatically admit California high school seniors to CSUs without an application heads to governor

Sacramento (Sept. 10, 2025) Senator Christopher Cabaldon’s groundbreaking legislation to automatically admit every qualifying high school senior in California to the California State University cleared its final vote in the Legislature Wednesday and heads to the governor’s desk. If Governor Newsom signs SB 640, students whose grades and coursework qualify them for CSU admission will receive a letter signed by the chancellor telling them they’ve been accepted at a list of campuses with enrollment capacity.

Bill to Ensure Severely Mentally Ill People Who Are In Jail for Misdemeanors Aren’t Sent Back to the Streets…

The Assembly Appropriations Committee advanced SB 820, authored by Senator Henry Stern (D–Los Angeles), a bill that will help make sure people with severe mental illness who commit misdemeanors have a chance to receive lifesaving medication while in jail.  The legislation will address persistent gaps in California’s treatment of individuals deemed incompetent to stand trial for misdemeanor offenses (MIST).
