Fifteen Fallen Officers Honored during California’s Peace Officers’

Memorial Day –May 8th 2017

 

SACRAMENTO—Law enforcement officers from across California converged at the State Capitol today to honor officers who made “the ultimate sacrifice” in the line of duty.  Senator Cathleen Galgiani served as the legislativesponsor of this year’s event that included the recognition of fifteen officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

SACRAMENTO -- About 200 youths representing about 40 groups belonging to the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color heard Sen. Holly J. Mitchell today offer words of inspiration.

"Because I represent you, I can't half step," Mitchell, D-Los Angeles, told the diverse gathering in support of the annual Free Our Dream event at a conference room on nearby K Street. "There should never be a question about me moving foward."

Mitchell also spoke in support of her package of bills to help reform the state's criminal justice system treats youths and young adults.

Statement on Passage of SB 607 – Keep Kids in School Act

On Monday, Senate Bill 607, authored by State Senator Nancy Skinner (Berkeley) passed the Senate floor by a vote of 29-9-2.

Recognizing that student suspensions can do more harm than good Senate Bill 607 eliminates willful defiance as grounds for suspension and expulsion for students grades K through 12th. The prohibition on such suspensions would be permanent for grades K-5th with a 10 year sunset date for grades 6th-12th. SB 607 encourages schools and districts to utilize alternatives to traditional school discipline practices. The bill received bi-partisan support.

Sacramento, CA – California's iconic salmon fishery, and the thousands of families who depend on the fishery for their livelihood, are in crisis.

Due to an unprecedented collapse in California’s salmon population, this week, Senator Mike McGuire and Assemblymember Jim Wood sent a letter to Governor Jerry Brown requesting he declare a statewide Salmon Fishery Disaster.

State Coastal Conservancy Grants $2 million to City of Los Angeles for Taylor Yard River Park Planning

LOS ANGELES - The Board of the State Coastal Conservancy, the State agency responsible for the protection and restoration of California’s coast and waterways, has authorized the disbursement of up to $2 million to the City of Los Angeles to develop the Implementation Plan for the Taylor Yard River Park on the Los Angeles River.

Sacramento –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) announced a bill to protect immigrants from irrelevant disclosures of their immigration status in open court. SB 785 requires that any questions about the immigration status of any witness, victim, or defendant first be deemed by a judge to be relevant to the subject of the litigation before.
