Senator Wiener Proposes New Bill to Enhance Player Safety and Security at Professional Sporting Events

Sacramento –  Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) today announced a bill that will enhance the safety and security of players and coaches participating in professional sporting events in California. Senate Bill 689, the Player Safety and Security Act, will build upon existing law and strengthen penalties for individuals who run onto the field or court of play, or who throw objects into those areas in an effort to disrupt the game.

Bill Protecting Schoolchildren from Sex Offenders Passes Education Committee

SACRAMENTO – Earlier today, the Senate Education Committee approved an important bill authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that seeks to protect school children from dangerous sex offenders.  Passed with strong bipartisan support, Senate Bill 26 would prohibit any registered sex offender from volunteering at K-12 schools and further restrict their access to school campuses in California.

In Face of Right-Wing Attacks, LGBT Long-term Care Senior Bill of Rights Passes Senate Committee

Sacramento –  Yesterday, the Senate Human Services Committee passed SB219, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) - the LGBT Senior Long-Term Care Bill of Rights for seniors in long term care facilities - despite attacks from anti-LGBT hate groups and the conservative media. The vote was 3-1 in committee, with Senators Steve Glazer (D-Orinda) and Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) joining Senator Wiener in support.

Hill Bill on Bus Seatbelt Safety Clears Senate Committee as Feds Say State Should Enact Law

The Senate Transportation and Housing Committee voted unanimously in favor of Senator Jerry Hill’s bill requiring the passengers buckle up when riding in buses that are equipped with safety belts. Senate Bill 20 also applies to bus drivers.
