SACRAMENTO – California is home to roughly 800,000 farmworkers who play a vital role in maintaining our food supply and whose work is more critical than ever during the pandemic. Now, with the enactment of Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) SB 721, the state will formally recognize these contributions each year on August 26 as part of the newly-established California Farmworker Day.

SACRAMENTO – Upon learning that Marybel Batjer will resign as President of the California Public Utilities Commission, Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), Chair of the California Senate Committee on Energy, Utilities and Communications, released the following statement:

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today signed legislation by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) expanding end-of-life treatment options for Californians by requiring that hospitals and certain types of healthcare facilities in the state allow terminally-ill patients to use medical cannabis for treatment and/or pain relief.
 

SACRAMENTO – Last Friday on Native American Day, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law SB 712, Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) legislation to rectify long-standing discriminatory practices by local governments that have deprived Native Americans of a fair process in their attempts to acquire ancestral lands.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Newsom has signed into law Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) bill to protect the fiscal solvency of California cities by allowing them to renegotiate significant amounts of debt accrued through their redevelopment agencies (RDAs).

SACRAMENTO – Today California gubernatorial candidate John Cox kicked off a three-day, statewide campaign bus tour in which he is exploiting a live bear as a political prop. In response, Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), author of the Circus Cruelty Prevention Act of 2019, issued the following statement:

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate yesterday unanimously approved Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) bill to designate August 26th of each year as “California Farmworker Day.”

“Despite the undeniable and innumerable benefits that farmworkers’ provide our state, their labor often goes unrecognized,” said Sen. Hueso. “Farmworkers are absolutely vital to California, and to our entire world. It’s beyond time we memorialize our gratitude with an annual day of recognition.”
