Legislation to Improve Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Case Management Heads to Governor’s Desk

Sacramento, CA – August 30, 2018 – Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) childhood lead poisoning prevention legislation, Senate Bill No. 1097, today received final approval from the State Legislature and is headed to the Governor’s desk for action. The bill, which was approved unanimously by both houses, would impose greater reporting requirements on the State of California with regards to childhood lead exposure, a critical step in ensuring appropriate case management data related to children who have been exposed to lead.

Local Conservation Corps Bill Approved by State Legislature

Sacramento, CA – August 31, 2018 – The California State Legislature yesterday gave its final approval for Senate Bill No. 1181, authored by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), which would authorize the Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) to enter into an agreement directly with one or more Local Conservation Corps to perform emergency or disaster response services at the discretion of CalOES. The measure received unanimous bicameral support and now awaits action by Governor Jerry Brown.

Bill Expanding Language Access Services Within State Court System Awaits Action by Governor

Sacramento, CA – September 6, 2018 – Last week the California State Legislature approved Senate Bill No. 1155 by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), which seeks to improve access to justice for thousands of Californians by expanding language access services within the state court system. To promote this objective, the legislation would allow small claims courts in California to provide interpreters to Limited English Proficient (LEP) court users during any and all court proceedings.

Governor Signs Bill Expanding Alzheimer's Data and Reporting

Sacramento, CA – September 24, 2018 – Yesterday Governor Brown signed into law Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) bill to make Alzheimer’s disease research in California more inclusive of at-risk and underrepresented populations. Senate Bill No. 1292 will require the Center for Health Communities to update the 2009 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures Report in California to quantify the burden of Alzheimer’s disease on African Americans, Asian-Pacific Islanders, Latinos and women, all of whom experience significantly higher disease prevalence rates.

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Bill Signed into Law

Sacramento, CA – September 24, 2018 – Over the weekend Governor Brown signed into law a bill that seeks to prevent childhood lead exposure and help localities better understand its sources. Senate Bill No. 1097, authored by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), would require the California Department of Public Health to provide on its website expanded county-based information regarding childhood blood lead testing outcomes, sources of lead exposure, and how these sources are removed, remediated or abated.

New California Law Authorizes Biomethane Procurement Program

Sacramento, CA – September 26, 2018 –  A new law in California will authorize the state to adopt a biomethane procurement program if it is found to be cost-effective, beneficial to ratepayers, and in advancement of the state’s  environmental and energy policies. The legislation, authored by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) and signed by Governor Brown on Sunday, seeks to further develop a pathway for renewable biomethane to be injected into the gas pipeline system, thereby displacing fossil gas and reducing the carbon intensity of the natural gas system.

California Small Claims Courts to Provide Interpreters Under New Law

Senator Hueso’s Bill to Support Underserved Communities Signed into Law

Sacramento, CA – September 28, 2018 – This afternoon Governor Brown signed legislation authored by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) and sponsored by the City of San Diego that would provide state resources for disadvantaged communities designated within California’s Promise Zones and Opportunity Zones. Senate Bill No. 635 received bipartisan and bicameral support in the Legislature and becomes effective January 1, 2019.
