Bill by Sens. Hueso and Durazo Prioritizes Workforce Development for Underserved Communities in Emergency and Climate Response

SACRAMENTO – As California considers a COVID-19 recovery plan, state leaders have an opportunity to align economic and climate goals by prioritizing workforce development in the expanding green economy, all while targeting underserved communities throughout California. This is the goal of Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) and Senator Maria Elena Durazo’s (D-Los Angeles) bill SB 604, which was approved unanimously last week by the State Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water.

Bill to Fix and Build California’s Roads Using Surplus Plastic Waste Advances in State Senate

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate Committee on Transportation today unanimously approved Senate Bill 580 by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) that would the task the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) with conducting a study assessing the feasibility, cost-effectiveness and lifecycle environmental benefits of including recycled plastics in asphalt used for the construction and repair of a state highway or road. The idea for SB 580 was brought to Sen. Hueso by students from Bonita Vista High School in Chula Vista.

Sylvia Campa Honored as 40th Senate District Woman of the Year

SACRAMENTO – The annual “Woman of the Year” celebration returned to the California State Legislature as part of Women’s History Month, albeit in a virtual capacity this year due to COVID-19 safety measures. Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) recognized Sylvia Campa as 2021 Woman of the Year for the 40th Senate District.

State Looks to Create New California Border Commission

SACRAMENTO – State Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) legislation to create a new California Border Commission received unanimous approval yesterday from the Senate Committee on Governmental Organization. SB 684 requires a restructuring of California-Mexico border affairs under one public stakeholder commission to improve efficiency, maximize resources, and increase community input.

Calexico Resident Rudolph Villalobos Recognized as 2020 Veteran of the Year for the 40th Senate District

Twelve California Lawmakers Introduce Bill Allowing Terminally-Ill Patients to Access Medical Cannabis in Healthcare Facilities

SACRAMENTO – Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) was joined by 11 of his colleagues today in introducing a bill to provide compassionate access to medical cannabis in healthcare facilities for Californians who are terminally ill. Senate Bill No. 311, known as “Ryan’s Law,” would require that hospitals and certain types of healthcare facilities in the State of California allow a terminally-ill patient to use medical cannabis for treatment and/or pain relief.

Hueso's Tijuana River Valley Legislation Signed into Law

Sacramento, CA – October 1, 2020 – In his final actions on legislation passed this session, California Governor Gavin Newsom last night signed into law Senator Ben Hueso’s (D-San Diego) bill requiring the California Environmental Protection Agency to create a Watershed Action Plan for the Tijuana River Valley.
