SACRAMENTO – Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s State of the State address to a joint session of the California State Legislature:

SACRAMENTO – In an effort to help improve the lives of working families in California, Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) today introduced legislation to ensure reliable schedules for workers whose lives and paychecks are disrupted by constantly changing work schedules.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino), Chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus and Assemblywoman Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara), Vice Chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s 2020-21 budget proposal:

SACRAMENTO – As the California State Legislature reconvened today, Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) introduced legislation that would repeal the 40-year-old California law requiring public school employees—including teachers—to pay for the cost of their substitutes, known as “differential pay”.  SB 796 would entitle school employees to continue to receive their full pay while on extended sick leave.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 227, a bill by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) to protect patient safety and reinforce nurse staffing ratio requirements in California.

Specifically, SB 227 will require the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to conduct unannounced visits to hospitals to inspect for compliance with nurse staffing ratio requirements.  The proposal empowers CDPH to enforce the nurse staffing ratios by fining hospitals that repeatedly create unsafe conditions for patient care.

SACRAMENTO – As the Trump Administration continues to roll back vital health care protections and services for women, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed historic legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will ensure access to medication abortion services on California public university campuses for students who seek to end their pregnancy.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom signed important campaign finance legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will prevent elected officials or candidates that commit acts of sexual assault or harassment from avoiding the personal and financial consequences of their actions merely because of their access to political contributions.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) requiring that law enforcement agencies and forensic laboratories promptly test all newly collected rape kits in California. 

SACRAMENTO – Legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) to require the University of California (UC) to follow the same rules as private employers and encourage university administrators to prioritize the accurate, timely and fair payment of their employees was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.

SACRAMENTO – While the federal government attempts to undo California’s continued efforts and successes on air quality, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a measure today authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that establishes ‘smog check’ requirements for heavy-duty diesel trucks in California.  Current law does not require heavy-duty vehicles to have the same types of smog checks that have been required for passenger vehicles for decades.
