SACRAMENTO – Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) today issued the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s May Revision of the 2019-2020 state budget:

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate today passed important legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will protect patient safety and reinforce nurse staffing ratio requirements.

In order to enhance hospital patient safety, Senate Bill 227 empowers CDPH to enforce the nurse staffing ratios by fining hospitals that repeatedly create unsafe conditions for patient care.  The proposal would require the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to conduct unannounced visits to hospitals to inspect for compliance with nurse staffing requirements.

SACRAMENTO – After reviewing the impact on victims of both deepfakes technology and nudity contractual agreements forced and then agreed upon under duress, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that tackles important issues that can be extremely damaging to a person’s life, career, public perception and even mental health.

SACRAMENTO – Earlier today, the Senate Education Committee approved legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will ensure access to medication abortion services on California public university campuses for students who seek to end their pregnancy up to 10 weeks.

SACRAMENTO – With strong bipartisan support, the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee today approved legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will require the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) to establish a competitive grant program to assist veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with the cost of a service dog.

SACRAMENTO – While states across our country continue to restrict access to critical reproductive health care services, the Senate Health Committee today approved important legislation by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will ensure access to medication abortion services on California public university campuses for students who seek to terminate their pregnancy during the first ten weeks.

SACRAMENTO – With unanimous support, the Senate Public Safety Committee today passed important legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) requiring that law enforcement agencies and forensic laboratories promptly analyze and test all newly collected rape kit evidence in California.

SACRAMENTO – After earning bipartisan support in the Senate and Assembly, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed Senate Bill 126 authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) and Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long Beach) that will require charter school governing boards to comply with the same accountability and transparency laws that traditional school district governing boards already follow.
