California Legislature Passes Cow Palace Gun Show Ban

Sacramento –  Today the California Legislature passed Senate Bill 221, which would ban all gun and ammunition sales at the Cow Palace, a state-owned venue located in Daly City. The Cow Palace hosts gun shows five times a year. The gun shows have drawn opposition from the community and local governments for years, including student protests at recent shows. SB 221 passed by a 26-13 vote and now goes to the Governor for his signature.

Sacramento, CA- As the legislative session comes to a close, SB 1100 and SB 1177  authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) passed both the Senate and Assembly and are headed to the Governor’s desk. The actions further establish Portantino’s legacy as one of California’s leaders for sensible gun control.  SB 1100 raises the age for all gun purchases to 21 after the recent tragedy at Stoneman Douglas High School.  SB 1177 prohibits the purchase of more than one long gun a month.

California Legislature Urges Federal Government to Stem Cross-Border Pollution

Sacramento, CA – August 30, 2018 – The California State Legislature today voted to approve a resolution authored by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) that urges the federal government and the US Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC) to take immediate action to adequately address cross-border pollution in the Tijuana River Valley. Senate Joint Resolution No. 22 received overwhelming bipartisan and bicameral support and will be sent to the U.S. Congress for their information.

Assembly passes Wieckowski housing bill closing loophole for charter cities

SACRAMENTO – With California in a severe housing crisis, a bill eliminating a loophole that allows charter cities to undermine the state’s housing element law was approved today by the state Assembly.  SB 1333, authored by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont), now heads back to the Senate where it is expected to win final passage.

Sacramento, CA – Legislation to phase out the use of harmful, mile-long fishing nets that ensnare and often kill whales, dolphins, sea turtles and other marine life passed the legislature today.  Senate Bill (SB) 1017, authored by Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica), was sent to the governor with a vote of 36 - 1 in the state Senate.  It passed the state Assembly with a bipartisan, near unanimous vote of 78 – 0 yesterday.

SB 1391 is part of the #EquityAndJustice2018 package jointly authored by Senators Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles).

The bill reverses laws passed in the 1990s that allowed for sentencing the youngest teens to the adult criminal justice system.
