I stand with our Governor, legislative leaders, Senate Pro Tem Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, who have announced they are preparing a Constitutional amendment to ensure and protect access to abortion in California.

Sacramento, Calif. – On May 3, 2022 Senator Lena A. Gonzalez (D-Long Beach)  released the below statement following news reports detailing an initial draft U.S. Supreme Court majority opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade and end federal constitutional protections for the right to abortion:

SACRAMENTO – In response to an expected U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe. Vs. Wade, Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, announced today he would join forces with other California leaders to enshrine women’s reproductive rights in California's Constitution.

“Clearly, the court is pursuing dangerous policy, undoing decades of precedent, and putting the lives of millions of women at risk,” Sen. Dodd said.  “In California, we will continue to defend a woman’s right to choose as well as access to health care by building a protective firewall in our state constitution.”

Senator Dave Cortese (D-Silicon Valley) made the following statement today:
“I’m deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Norman Mineta, someone I was honored to call a friend and mentor. Senator Durazo Issues Statement in Response to Medi-Cal Expansion for Eligible Californians 50 Years and Older

SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) today released the following statement based on the draft U.S. Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade. 

SACRAMENTO – Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), LGBTQ Victory Institute, Equality California and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California today announced the national, LGBTQ-led rollout of trans refuge state legislation in 19 states. In response to recent executive and legislative action in states like Alabama and Texas, these trans refuge laws will shield trans kids and their families from penalties when seeking gender-affirming care.

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s Senate Bill 836 passed the Senate by a vote of 28-0. It will head to the Assembly for policy committee hearings. This legislation will extend the safeguards from SB 785 (Wiener, 2018), which protected a person’s immigration status in a public court record, unless the presiding judge determined that immigration status was relevant information. This legislation had a sunset date of January 1, 2022, so it has now expired.
