 “I am utterly dismayed over the race-based killing of law enforcement officers in Dallas on Thursday, and the ongoing homicide of Black men at the hands of law enforcement nationwide.

“Based on what we have learned about these acts of violence so far, they are racist and wrong.

LOS ANGELES – Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles), in his capacity as Acting Governor, issued a proclamation today declaring July 8, 2016 as “Vin Scully Day” in the State of California to honor the legendary Los Angeles Dodgers announcer.

LOS ANGELES - California Acting Governor and Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León issued the following statement regarding the attacks on law enforcement in Dallas, Texas. 

"I deeply mourn with the families and friends of the five brave police officers killed in Dallas, Texas last night. As our nation continues to grapple with issues of race and gun safety, violence should never be the answer. In my capacity as Acting Governor, I have ordered flags in all state buildings to be lowered in the officers' memory until sunset on July 12."

Gov. Jerry Brown today signed into law Senator Steve Glazer’s legislation to ban the so-called bullet button, a key element of a historic gun reform package approved by the Legislature a day earlier.

Glazer, D-Orinda, is joint author with Sen. Isadore Hall, D-Los Angeles, on the bullet button ban, SB 880.

A bullet button assault-style rifle was used by the shooters who killed 14 people and wounded 21 in the San Bernardino terrorist attack last year.

Senate Bill 1446 sponsored by Sen. Loni Hancock

SACRAMENTO – California Gov. Jerry Brown today signed into law a bill by Sen. Loni Hancock that prohibits the possession of any ammunition-holding device for an assault-style weapon that holds more than 10 rounds.

(SACRAMENTO)–The Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee voted 10-4 late yesterday to approve Senate Bill 1414 by State Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis), legislation to increase the effectiveness of ratepayer-funded energy efficiency programs, which are critical to the State’s energy and environmental policies.

(SACRAMENTO, CA)  - Today, the California Legislature sent Senate Bill (SB) 939, authored by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), to the Governor.  The bill will help protect Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) residents and their estates against significant delays in lump-sum entrance fee repayments. 

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) today released the following statements on the Legislature’s passage of the nation’s strongest gun-violence prevention measures.

SACRAMENTO — The California Legislature today gave final approval to the “No Place Like Home” initiative, a first-of-its kind plan to assist local communities in preventing and addressing homelessness. This proposal provides $2 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of permanent supportive housing for homeless individuals with mental illness.  The “No Place Like Home” initiative takes a “housing first” approach, which has been used successfully in other states and is considered best practice by many homeless advocates and social service experts.
