SACRAMENTO – The California Senate approved and sent to the governor a Sen. Bob Hertzberg plan to require regional water-management officials to report the vulnerability of their water systems to an earthquake.

Bill to Prevent Child Hunger Headed to Governor Brown

Sacramento-The State Senate yesterday gave final approval on a bill to address childhood hunger and improve access to the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs on a unanimous bipartisan concurrence vote of 39 to 0. The bill was approved earlier this week by the State Assembly 79 to 0. SB 708, authored by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia), a former elementary school teacher, will direct schools to make applications for free or reduced-price meals available electronically online, to provide them in multiple languages and to follow uniform standards.

SACRAMENTO—Today, the California State Senate passed Senate Bill 333 authored by Senator Cathleen Galgiani (D-Stockton). The bill passed on a bipartisan vote of 37-0. Senate Bill 333, which is sponsored by the California District Attorneys Association and enjoys overwhelming law enforcement support, would create a new tool for prosecutors to combat three substances commonly known as ‘date rape’ drugs.

Governor Signs Allen Legislation to Protect Veterans from Pension Scams

Sacramento, CA – Today Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a measure authored by Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) to protect veterans from pension scams.  The bill, Senate Bill (SB) 386, was proposed in response to the increasing number of veterans who are falling prey to investment schemes in which they are promised a lump-sum cash payment in exchange for their monthly retirement income.

Assembly Sends Coal Divestment Measure to the Governor

SACRAMENTO – The California Assembly today approved SB 185 (De León), which requires California’s public pension funds, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS), to divest from holdings in thermal coal. The measure passed on a 43-27 vote. SB 185 now heads to the Governor’s desk.

Senate Bill 229 was approved by the Assembly this morning on a bipartisan vote of 69-0 and, if signed by the Governor, will mark the first time in nearly a decade that the State of California has funded new judges in the wake of an ongoing judge shortage.The California State Assembly has voted unanimously to approve Senator Richard D. Roth’s (D-Riverside) proposal to fix California’s judge shortage.
