Statement by California State Senator Holly J. Mitchell

“As we open our hearts and offer condolences to those who are reeling from loss in the wake of the massacre at Emanuel AME, whose pastor was my South Carolina colleague State Senator Rev. Clementa Pinckney, we must renew our commitment and find the will, in memory of the dead and for the sake of the living, to bring to an end the spiral of violence that racial conflict evokes in this country.

Bill to help schools care for students with chronic diseases earns unanimous, bipartisan support 
SACRAMENTO—Legislation by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) to enable schools to hire more school nurses and take a lead role in managing chronic childhood diseases received unanimous, bipartisan support in the Assembly Health Committee today.

Sacramento, CA – State Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) issued the following statement today in response to the news that the source of the tarballs on South Bay beaches was the Refugio oil spill:

SACRAMENTO – The Senate today approved a joint resolution by Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to reject a case out of Texas that challenges the long-held principle of “one person one vote.”

“Many of my neighbors, whose hard work makes Los Angeles function, who pay taxes that support government services, would suddenly become non-entities because of their immigrant status,” De León said. “Like ghosts, they would walk the streets and ride buses invisible to state governance.”

Sacramento - Senator Holly J. Mitchell welcomed the 30th District’s 2015 Small Business Owner of the Year to the State Capitol, in an annual event which celebrates the achievements of entrepreneurs and innovators. This year’s honoree is handbag designer Onna Erlich, founder of OnnaErlich.com, whom Senator Mitchell escorted, along with her husband/business partner Joel Bell and son James, onto the floor of the State Senate chamber to present her a Certificate of Commendation.

Bill naming Solano interchange for WW II pilot earns unanimous, bipartisan support 
 
SACRAMENTO— The State Assembly’s Transportation Committee voted unanimously today to approve a resolution by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) naming a Solano interchange in honor of Lieutenant Colonel James Warren, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen and a Vacaville resident who passed away last year.

Bill to aid affected residents, businesses earns unanimous, bipartisan support 
 
SACRAMENTO -- Legislation coauthored by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) and Assemblymember Bill Dodd (D-Napa) to aid residents and businesses in Napa, Solano, and Sonoma Counties affected by the August 24, 2014 South Napa Earthquake earned the unanimous, bipartisan approval of the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee today.

SACRAMENTO—Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) issued the following comment today following the Legislature’s approval of the State’s 2015-16 Budget. Wolk is Chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Resources, Environmental Protection, Energy and Transportation, and one of the lead authors of Proposition 1, the Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014:

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León today applauded the passage of a budget compromise reached with the Governor, saying the accord was a responsible spending plan with sound investments to secure California’s future.

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bob Hertzberg’s efforts to reduce unreasonable fees added to minor traffic-infraction fines is included in the budget deal reached by Gov. Brown and fellow lawmakers, under the budget agreement approved today.
