SACRAMENTO – As the state celebrates the life of civil rights leader and labor organizer César Chávez today, President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate Kevin de León released the following statement:

"Today California honors and celebrates a man who dedicated his life to improving the working conditions of farm workers and their families in California. 

We honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez by continuing  to seek justice for the most vulnerable migrant worker.

California Legislature Honors Contributions of the Pakistani American Community

Sacramento-For the first time in California history, the State Senate today recognized the contributions of California’s Pakistani American community by adopting Senate Resolution 15 by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) declaring March 23rd, 2015 as “Pakistani American Day”.

“End of Life Option Act” Clears First Committee

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Legislation carried by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) to expand end of life options available to Californians passed out of the Senate Health Committee on a 6 to 2 vote today.  Senate Bill (SB) 128, the End of Life Option Act, will allow a mentally competent, terminally ill adult in California in the final stages of life to request aid-in-dying medication from a physician.  SB 128 now heads to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

RELEASE: Senate Approves Emergency Drought Funding/El Senado Aprueba Fondos de Emergencia para la Sequía

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate today approved legislation to accelerate more than $1 billion in funds to address California’s drought crisis.  The bipartisan action came months before the state budget will be approved, and provides a down payment on the state’s efforts to respond to the drought and strengthen California’s water infrastructure.
