Governor Brown Signs End of Life Option Act

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed the End of Life Option Act, coauthored by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), which provides mentally-capable, terminally-ill Californians with the option to request a doctor’s prescription for aid-in-dying medication. This Second Extraordinary Session bill was modeled after Senators Lois Wolk (D-Davis) and Monning’s Senate Bill (SB) 128 and continued the effort to enact the End of Life Option Act in California this year.

Governor endorses plan to help promote legal services for low-income Californians

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Brown today signed into law a plan to help low-income Californians have greater access to equal justice by using unclaimed funds to help attorneys practice public-interest law.
“Every year, thousands of young lawyers graduate from law school with a desire to launch their careers performing public service,” said Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, author of Senate Bill 134. “Faced with skyrocketing education costs, however, more and more of our finest legal minds are opting to instead go straight into private practice.”

Governor signs into law Sen. Bob Hertzberg plan to reduce recidivism by providing help to mentally ill offenders

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Brown, acting in support of diversion programs that reduce recidivism among nonviolent mentally ill offenders, today signed into law a funding plan sponsored by Sen. Bob Hertzberg.
“Too many people with mental health needs are taken to jail as a first option,” Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, said about Senate Bill 621. “This bill will help make clear that counties can apply for special grants to pay for diversion programs for the mentally ill. This will save tax dollars and help those in need become more self-sufficient and stay out of jail.”
