As national concern about police accountability grows so do doubts about grand jury process

Sacramento — A measure to prohibit the use of the criminal Grand Jury in cases of law officer-involved shootings or in cases where the alleged use of excessive force by an officer results in the death of a suspect has been approved by California’s Senate. The Senate floor vote was 23-12, largely along party lines, sending the bill, SB 227, to the Assembly.

SACRAMENTO – As part of a national effort to raise public awareness, Senator Bob Hertzberg (D – Van Nuys), former Senate President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg, and officials from counties nationwide today highlighted ways to reduce the number of people suffering from mental illness who are jailed.

Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside) issued the following statement on the arrest of Rodolfo Dehoyos:

“I commend the Riverside District Attorney’s Office and the Riverside Police Department for their efforts to ensure Mr. Dehoyos no longer takes advantage of our community at the expense of civil rights and small business owners.

                                                                                                                                           Legislation Will Help Address Shortage of Health Care Providers

SACRAMENTO – As part of a national effort to raise public awareness, Senator Bob Hertzberg, former Senate President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg, and officials from counties nationwide Thursday will highlight ways to reduce the number of people suffering from mental illness who are jailed.
 

Senator Richard D. Roth’s (D-Riverside) measure to honor the lives and service of three local Medal of Honor recipients passed the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee today on a bipartisan, unanimous vote.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 38 designates the portion of State Highway Route 91 in Riverside from Madison Street to 3rd Street as the “Staff Sergeant Salvador J. Lara, Staff Sergeant Ysmael R. Villegas and Sergeant Jesus S. Duran Memorial Highway.”

(SACRAMENTO, CA)  - Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) is pleased to announce that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) awarded a $2,996,768 grant to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation.

Elkhorn Slough’s Blue Carbon project will increase regional carbon sequestration through salt marsh restoration.
