NEW BILL SEEKS INFORMATION ON COST-OVERRUNS IN STATE CONTRACTS

Sacramento – Senator Loni Hancock introduced legislation today to require bidders on state contracts to report, in their bid, whether there have been cost-overruns on previous state projects they have worked on. The bill, SB 630, adds a new section to the state Public Contracts code.

Leno Bill Creates New GPS Data Privacy Protections for Smartphone, Tablet Users

SACRAMENTO – A bill introduced in the Senate today would help consumers make more informed decisions about their privacy when installing a new smartphone or tablet application that will track their location using GPS. Senate Bill 576, authored by Senator Mark Leno, requires that consumers get a clear notice explaining how their location information will be used and shared when they install a new app. It also ensures that app users give expressed consent before their geolocation data can be collected and shared.

Beall Proposes Bill To Simplify Use Tax Refunds For Consumers

SACRAMENTO -- A bill streamlining sales and use tax refunds for California’s consumers was introduced Friday by Senator Jim Beall, D-San Jose.“Senate Bill 640 can speed up the refunds to customers who have paid a use tax and are owed large refunds,’’ Beall said. “The bill makes the refund process cleaner and simpler for customers by allowing them to directly apply for the refund and receive that refund directly from the Board of Equalization instead of through the retailer.’’

New Public Safety Legislation From Senator Pavley Protects Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Victims

SACRAMENTO – Senator Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills) has introduced two bills to address serious public safety issues, particularly for those who have been victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.SB 307 expands the potential use of criminal justice restraining orders when offenders are released to their communities, and SB 507 provides victims with additional protection in cases involving violent sex offenders. SACRAMENTO -- A proposal to track information pinpointing group homes that rely on over medicating foster care youth to control their behavior was introduced Thursday by Senator Jim Beall, D-San Jose.“Senate Bill 484 steps up the state’s ability to identify group homes that  depend on psychotropic medications as the easiest means to control the behavior of foster youth,’’ Beall said. “Drugging and sedating children should never be considered the primary option in lieu of counseling, therapy, and appropriate treatment.’’
