Senate Votes to Pass Legislation on Plastic Pollution

Sacramento, California – The California State Senate voted to pass SB 1422 and SB 1263. Both measures are authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D–La Cañada Flintridge.  They will help increase the knowledge of the risks of micro plastic materials and microfibers on the marine environment and drinking water.  These issues impose a potential threat to the public’s health as the levels of micro plastics in drinking water are not currently monitored.

Senator Portantino’s Gun Violence Prevention Bill Passes the Senate

Sacramento, California – Today, the California State Senate voted to pass SB 1100 authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D–La Cañada Flintridge. SB 1100 proposes to prohibit a person from making more than one firearm purchase within a 30-day period in California and increases the age requirement for purchasing all firearms to 21 years. The bill is now headed to the Assembly.

Senator Portantino Receives Honorary Service Award from First District PTA

Glendale, California- Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D- La Cañada Flintridge, received the Honorary Service Award from the First District PTA. Portantino, a PTA member, has been a lifelong advocate of K-12 public school education.  He has worked closely with the First District PTA throughout his years in office.  Portantino is the father of two daughters, one who completed her K-12 education in public schools and the other a current 10th grader in a public high school.

Senator Portantino is pleased with Education Budget Actions Included in the State Senate’s Budget

Sacramento, California- Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D-La Canada Flintridge, is proud of the State Senate’s augmentations and changes to the Governor’s May revised budget plan for education. The State Senate’s 2018-2019 proposed budget includes the funding plan recommended by the Senate’s Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance chaired by Portantino.  The Senate has proposed spending of $78 billion from Proposition 98 on K-14 and additional General Fund dollars to increase the State’s investment in higher education.

Senator Portantino’s SB 459, Will Stop Pension Investments in Sellers of Prohibited Assault Weapons in California

Sacramento, California- Today, Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D-La Canada Flintridge, joined California Treasurer John Chiang in announcing SB 426, which seeks to cut off state pension investments in companies that sell assault weapons that are banned in California. SB 459 is sponsored by the Treasurer and has already garnered several co-authors including Assemblymember Eloise Reyes and Assemblymember Mike Gipson.

Korean Driver’s License Passes Second Legislative Hurdle

Sacramento, California – Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed SB 1360 and is headed to the Senate Floor for a floor vote. Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D – La Cañada Flintridge, authored SB 1360 which will allow a person with a driver’s license from the Republic of Korea to be exempt from specific testing requirements when applying for a California Driver’s License.

California State Senate Votes to Progress Suicide Prevention Legislation

Sacramento, California – The California State Senate voted to pass SB 972 with bi-partisan support. The bill authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) would require public, charter, and private schools to print a suicide prevention hotline number and/or text crisis lines on student identification cards for grades seven through all college institutions.

Legislation to Protect California’s Communities Pass Primary Committees

Sacramento, California –Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) authored SB 1317 and SB 1266, two important bills to protect communities against burglaries and unregulated recovery facilities. Both bills passed key policy committees this week, Senate Health and Senate Public Safety, and are now moving to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
