Senator Portantino Recognizes Yasmin Beers as 2018 Woman of the Year

Glendale, California – Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D – La Cañada Flintridge has selected Glendale City Manager Yasmin Beers as the 2018 Woman of the Year. She is the first woman to serve as city manager and her role is to supervise nearly 2000 city employees. Formerly, she has served as the city’s Chief Operating Officer, the Deputy City Manager, Assistant City Manager and Interim City Manager. She was previously a member of the Soroptismist International of Glendale and a Board Member of the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.

Senator Portantino is committed to Preventing Gun Violence with SB 1100

Sacramento, California – Today, Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D–La Cañada Flintridge, submitted amendments to SB 1100 to prevent gun violence. The bill would prohibit a person from making more than one firearm purchase within a 30-day period in California and increase the age requirement for purchasing all firearms to 21 years. Senator Portantino has a long record of supporting gun control and has previously authored legislation to prevent gun violence.  He successfully authored legislation to end the open carry of firearms on Main Street California.

Senator Portantino introduces legislation supporting P-TECH for Early College Programs in California

Sacramento, California- Today, Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D- La Cañada Flintridge, introduced SB 1243 to support early college/high school programs including pathways in technology. The measure will help provide students the opportunity to access college level courses and college degree credits at a high school level. These programs will help target students who are frequently underrepresented in postsecondary education. The bill also provides the opportunity for third party support of high school and college resources to ensure the success of P-TECH programs.

Education Budget Sub-Committee Chair Unveils Budget Proposal to Increase Local Control Funding Formula for K-12 Districts

Sacramento, California- Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D–La Cañada Flintridge, Chairman of the Senate Budget Sub-Committee on Education and Senators Ben Allen, D-Santa Monica, Steve Glazer, D—Orinda, Jerry Hill, D—San Mateo, and the Santa Clara Counties introduced a budget proposal to add $1.2 billion dollars to Governor Brown’s Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The proposal assumes that the 2018-2019 budget includes the full funding of LCFF plus an addition $1.2 billion.

Senator Portantino Introduces Bill to Bring Suicide Prevention Hotline to School Campuses

Sacramento, California-  Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D – La Cañada Flintridge, introduced SB 972 which would require all public, charter, and private schools to print a suicide prevention hotline number on the back of students identification cards. The measure would be enacted July 1, 2019 for grades seven through twelve and all higher education institutions. Adolescent suicide and self-inflicted injury are a serious social and public health concern. Senator Portantino has a distinguished record supporting the well-being of kids at all levels.

Senator Anthony Portantino Holds Student Mural Contest for District Conference Room

Glendale, California -Today, Senator Anthony J. Portantino announced that he is holding a mural contest for his Glendale District Office. Senator Portantino drew inspiration for the contest from the mural inside the Burbank City Council chambers.  The contest is open to all public and private high school art classes from the 25th District.  Student teams are encouraged to submit their designs for the mural that will be showcased in his conference room.

Senator Portantino Urges Colleagues to Oppose Increased Azerbaijan Lobbying Efforts

Sacramento, California – Today, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) sent out a letter to his Senate and Assembly colleagues in the Capitol urging them to resist increased lobby efforts put forth by the Government of Azerbaijan.  Portantino became alarmed by the increasing presence of the Azeri Government in Sacramento and in Los Angeles. Recently the California Azerbaijan Friendship Association (CAFA) has begun outreach to political and academic leaders in a significant public relations and lobbying effort.
